The Norfolk Master Gardener (NMG) program offers many opportunities for volunteers to be involved with projects that improve the environmental conditions and beauty of the city of Norfolk. These projects provide an outlet to demonstrate to the general public that the NMG and Virginia Cooperative Extension are available to provide the public with accurate, research-based horticultural information.
A new committee has been created to identify NMGV projects that will involve Norfolk’s youth. We hope to reach a larger number of youngsters by assisting recreation center staffs with garden design, installation, and maintenance with other educational activities.
Our first project is with the East Ocean View Recreational Center located at 9520 20th Bay Street. The City of Norfolk cooperates by tilling the 2 garden plots and providing the compost. NMGVs Juanita and Lenny Snead work with the children to grow vegetables as well as catching fish. At the end of the summer, they have a fish fry featuring vegetables which they grew.
Horticulture Therapy Program
NMGV sponsors a plant therapy project at the Norfolk Sentara Hospital by providing plant and garden activities with long term rehabilitation patients.
