A new committee to identify NMGV projects that will involve Norfolk’s youth has been created. We hope to reach a larger number of youngsters by assisting recreation center staffs with garden design, installation, and maintenance and with other educational activities. We’re looking for bright, imaginative, enthusiastic people who enjoy working with youngsters in a horticultural setting.
The first project was developed by Juanita and Lenny Snead at the East Ocean View Recreational Center, 9520 20th Bay St, and will be the prototype for other recreational centers. They have 2 large gardens plots. The City of Norfolk cooperates by tilling the plots and providing compost. Juanita and Lenny work with a wide range of youngsters growing vegetables and catching fish. At the end of the summer, they have a fish fry, featuring vegetables the youngsters grew, where they all enjoy the fruits of their labor. Many of the kids never before saw the plants from which their food grows.
